Northern Ireland Energy Switching Hits Record Highs in Q4 2025
Domestic electricity switching in Northern Ireland rose to 44,500 in the fourth quarter of 2025, up from the prior quarter. This gave a switching rate of 5.2%, compared to 3.0% previously.
The Utility Regulator's quarterly retail energy market monitoring report for Q4 2025 recorded these figures. Network companies and suppliers submit data under the retail energy market monitoring framework.
Electric Ireland's exit from the domestic electricity market contributed to higher switching among its former credit customers.
Industrial and commercial electricity switching fell to a rate of 2.0% from 2.3%.
Gas switching by domestic customers in the Greater Belfast area reached 5,813, the highest on record for the second straight quarter. This compared to 2,209 in Q3 2025.
Industrial and commercial gas switching edged up to 1.1% from 0.9%.
