Fermanagh Residents Oppose Replacement of Derrygonnelly Street Lamps
Staff from the Department for Infrastructure began removing traditional Georgian-style street lamps in Derrygonnelly, Fermanagh, on Tuesday. The lamps were replaced with modern versions. Residents stated they received no prior consultation on the changes.
Derrygonnelly contains listed buildings on its main street. Locals view the traditional lamps as a key feature matching the village's Georgian architecture. Dr. Eileen McCaffrey said the new lamps do not suit the village style and criticized the department for prioritizing the work over road safety issues like potholes and road markings.
Dr. McCaffrey noted the village's status as a conservation area near the Geopark and Lough Navar, which draws tourists. She called the lack of consultation unacceptable. The Department for Infrastructure has not yet responded to requests for comment.
