Ulster Farmers' Union president William Irvine called for the full removal of inheritance tax on family farms. He spoke after the UK chancellor's spring statement made no mention of agriculture or the agri-food industry.

Irvine said farmers can support economic growth and development if free to invest without this tax burden. He highlighted the sector's role in rural economies, food production, and employment.

Farmers want to invest and expand their businesses under suitable conditions, Irvine added.

The UFU noted the UK government's December decision to raise the 100% agricultural property relief threshold for inheritance tax from £1 million to £2.5 million. The change allows transfer between partners and starts in April 2026.

Irvine stated many family farms will still receive large inheritance tax bills. He said farmers will divert funds from technology, business expansion, and workforce support to cover these taxes.

The UFU maintains its position that inheritance tax on family farms must be eliminated entirely.
