Police Service of Northern Ireland officers found a crude viable device during a security operation in Newry. The alert centred on the Ashgrove Road area.

A report came in at around 11:10am on Monday about a device left there. Officers set up a safety zone and closed nearby roads.

Ammunition Technical Officers inspected the item and declared it viable but crude. The operation concluded after the examination.

Residents returned home once cordons lifted. Inspector Porter said investigations continue into the incident.
