Strong Attendance at Ards and North Down Employment and Apprenticeship Fairs
Ards and North Down Borough Council hosted two employability events in February through its Labour Market Partnership. The Jobs, Support and Training Fair and the Apprenticeship Careers Fair drew strong attendance from residents of various ages. The events offered job opportunities, training support and career advice.
Funded by the Department for Communities, the fairs formed part of the council's efforts to assist residents in accessing employment and developing skills. The Jobs, Support and Training Fair featured 53 exhibitors, with a focus on the health and social care sector. Attendees met employers with live vacancies and received CV guidance, interview preparation and career advice from support agencies.
Visitors explored training programmes, start-up support and employment pathways. Many reported increased confidence in pursuing career steps after engaging with employers and advisors. The Apprenticeship Careers Fair included 33 employers, training organisations and further education providers.
Pupils, jobseekers and career changers learned about apprenticeships in sectors including engineering, construction, technology, finance, hospitality, public services and health and social care. Exhibitors detailed required skills and qualifications, while advisors assisted with retraining options. The events highlighted apprenticeships as a route to earn while learning.
Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Gillian McCollum, described the fairs as successful in connecting people with opportunities. She thanked employers, partners and organisations involved. McCollum noted the events strengthen the local economy and community resilience.
Labour Market Partnerships develop targeted employment action plans for council areas, funded by the Department for Communities. They enable local and regional collaboration to support people into work. A further employability initiative is scheduled for 19 March at Ards Blair Mayne Wellbeing and Leisure Complex.
