Contractor Appointed for £2m Environmental Improvement Scheme in Rathfriland, Gilford and Markethill
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has welcomed the appointment of Northstone as contractor for the construction phase of a £2 million Environmental Improvement Scheme in Rathfriland, Gilford and Markethill. The project is funded through the Covid Recovery Small Settlements Regeneration Programme.
The initiative involves collaboration between the Department for Communities, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, the Department for Infrastructure, and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. Works will upgrade paving, lighting, street furniture and shared spaces to improve accessibility and support local businesses.
Initial construction is scheduled to begin in Rathfriland in mid-March, followed by Gilford over the summer and Markethill in autumn 2026. The council will manage the scheme, which aims to regenerate small rural towns.
Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Andrew Muir described the project as an example of inter-departmental cooperation to invest in rural communities. Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins noted contributions to active travel and outdoor activities.
Deputy Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Jessica Johnston, stated that the works mark an important step for enhancing rural towns, with commitments to inform residents during construction.
