Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is recruiting a Strategic Planning and Performance Manager to guide corporate planning and performance management across one of Northern Ireland's largest council areas.

The role involves leading on corporate planning, performance management and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will work with senior officers and elected members to set priorities and monitor organisational performance.

Applications are open on the council's careers page. The council is an equal opportunities employer.

At a recent meeting, councillors unanimously backed a motion calling for increased investment in mental health and suicide prevention services.

Cllr Elaine Brough, who proposed the motion, said the district has the highest suicide rate per head of population of all 11 council areas, citing Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency figures. The motion was seconded by Cllr Colette McNulty.

Cllr Brough said behind every statistic is a person, family and community affected by suicide. She said local organisations and charities work tirelessly with limited resources and need greater support.

The motion also highlighted that around eight in ten people who die by suicide in Northern Ireland are men, and suicide is the leading cause of death among males under 50.

Councillors called on the Department of Health to increase investment in community-based services, provide an update on plans for a new mental health unit in Omagh, and establish a local forum focusing on men's mental health and suicide prevention.

The council also committed to working through its Integrated Wellbeing Network with local partners to improve access to information, support and early intervention.
