Declan McAteer of Newry has died peacefully at home, surrounded by family and friends. He was the beloved son of Siobhan and loving brother of Kevin.

His funeral arrangements were announced by McGennity Funeral Directors & Stone Masons. Family and friends were welcome to pay their respects on Friday 30th October between 2pm and 9pm at 4 James Connolly Park, Newry. The house was private on Saturday morning. Removal took place on Saturday 31st October at 11.15am, arriving for Mass at 12 noon in The Chapel of Ease, Monkshill. Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.

The family requested family flowers only, with donations in lieu, if desired, to WAVE Trauma Centre via the donations box in the home or any family member.

Tributes on social media described McAteer as a 'true gentleman', a 'lovely lad', and a 'beautiful young man'. McGuigan's Bar remembered him as a 'real friend', saying he was quiet, polite, and a true gentleman. The bar said his death came after an illness he fought without complaint, always keeping a positive, smiling face.

McAteer was a supporter of Newcastle United and a member of supporters' group The Irish Mags. The group has opened a GoFundMe page to raise money for his family's chosen charity, Wave Trauma Centre.
