A family in Derry has decorated their home for Halloween in memory of their son who died from epilepsy, while also raising money for charity.

John and Orla O’Hagan lost their son Peter to Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) five years ago, 16 months after he was diagnosed with the condition.

The couple said Epilepsy Action provided them with significant support after Peter’s death. They have raised money for the charity in the past, but this year decided to set up a collection box at their home on Liscloon Drive in Shantallow.

John O’Hagan spent three days decorating the house, which includes a clown figure in the garden with the donation box placed beside it. He said people stop to look at the decorations on their way to school.

Peter’s friends, who are now in their twenties, planned to visit the house to see the decorations.

The family said they are aware it is an expensive time of year and that there is no obligation to donate large amounts. John O’Hagan said any donation, no matter how small, helps.

The fundraiser coincides with SUDEP Awareness Month. Epilepsy Action is a charity dedicated to supporting people with epilepsy, raising awareness, and campaigning for better services and treatment.
