Derry Graves Association announces weekend of republican commemorations
The Derry Graves Association has outlined plans for a series of commemorative events over the weekend of June 26 to 28. The programme includes a Friday evening talk, a Saturday ceremony for a memorial book, and a Sunday procession to the City Cemetery.
On Friday at 7pm, writer and former IRA prisoner Danny Morrison will speak at the Maldron Hotel. Admission costs £10.
The following day at 3pm, the association will update its Book of Remembrance at the Ráth Mór offices. This initiative aims to preserve republican history in the city.
The main commemoration takes place on Sunday. Participants are asked to gather at Central Drive in Creggan at 1pm before walking to the City Cemetery. Donegal Councillor Gerry McMonagle will address the crowd. Later that evening at 7pm, the annual draw will be held at Ráth Mór.
The association maintains the Republican plot in the cemetery year-round. A spokesperson said all events are organised with dignity and respect, and that the group’s objective is to honour those who died for Irish freedom and to ensure their memory is passed to future generations.
