The weekly Parkrun in Omagh reaches its tenth anniversary this Saturday, with organisers encouraging local people to take part in the milestone event.

The anniversary run will begin at 9.30am at Omagh Leisure Complex. Runners, walkers, former participants, volunteers and supporters are all welcome to attend and mark a decade of the Saturday morning event.

Parkrun first came to Omagh on the second Saturday in October 2016. Almost 300 runners and walkers attended that inaugural event at the leisure centre track. The event has continued every Saturday morning since then.

Peter Dolan, a local runner and long-time organiser, has been involved since the beginning. He said the event averages around 100 participants each week. Times are recorded so participants can track their progress, but Parkrun is not a race.

Dolan said the event provides purpose and structure to Saturday mornings, and friendships have grown between many of those who attend. He said the event's success and longevity would not be possible without its volunteers, who are an integral part of Parkrun.

Parkrun is a free, timed five-kilometre event held every Saturday morning at locations around the world. It is open to people of all ages and abilities, who can run, jog or walk the route at their own pace.

Dolan encouraged the local community to come out on Saturday to mark the milestone and look ahead to the next decade. New participants can register at any time, and there are opportunities to volunteer.
