A man from Donaghadee has died following a road traffic accident in South Africa.

Wesley Martin died in a collision on the N4 toll road in the north east of the country on September 16.

His sister Doreen Martin, who was travelling with him, also died, as did a Mozambican national whose name has not been released.

The crash happened after a lorry on the D799 Kaapsehoop Road allegedly failed to stop at the toll road's intersection and collided with three other vehicles, according to South Africa's Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.

The department's spokeswoman, Zandile Mavuso, said the exact circumstances of the collision remained unclear and would be subject to further investigation.

Martin was the vice-chairman and operations director of Donaghadee Heritage Preservation Company, which is working to restore the Sir Samuel Kelly lifeboat and create a visitor centre.

Dawn Petrie, secretary of the project, said Martin was a valued member who dedicated many hours to the preservation work.

He was credited with organising and working alongside the maintenance team, carrying out essential work on the lifeboat and its shelter, and liaising with contractors.

Donaghadee Rugby Club held a minute's silence at a match against Grosvenor at the weekend, describing Martin as a stalwart of the club.

The Port o Call Golf Society in Donaghadee also paid tribute on Facebook, saying he would be missed at their monthly outings.

The Martin family are understood to have been visiting relatives in South Africa and had travelled there previously.
