A teenager from Armagh will compete in the Miss Teen Great Britain final next month.

Eva Elizabeth Downie, 16, a pupil at St Catherine's College, was selected earlier as Miss Teen Armagh. She will travel to Blackpool for the final in early October.

Downie has been using her title to raise awareness of dyslexia. She has posted facts about the condition on social media and made pencil cases for the Armagh second-hand school uniform shop.

She told Armagh I that she picked dyslexia as her platform because she has dyslexia herself and wants to help others understand it. She has also started learning American Sign Language.

Downie completed a 99,000 Steps Challenge for a local children's cancer charity and has been preparing for the pageant by practising her walk and styling skills.

The winner receives £1,000 and opportunities for appearances, charity work and modelling. Fifty-three girls from Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales are competing.

Downie said she was inspired to enter pageants after meeting Miss Northern Ireland at a fashion show. She hopes to use the title to help people with learning disabilities.

Her mother Stephanie said the family is proud of her and that the competition promotes confidence, charity work and positive role models.
