A Northern Ireland over-70s walking football team has won the World Masters Walking Football Cup in Swansea, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament held from August 13 to 16.

The team recorded victories over two England sides and draws with the Republic of Ireland and Wales before securing a 2-0 win in the final. Goals came from David Lemon, Ian Moore and George Gribben during the competition, while goalkeeper Ellis Harvey saved three penalties.

Northern Ireland also fielded teams in the over-60s and over-65s categories. The over-60s reached the semi-finals, with John McClure and Anthony Cafolla scoring. The over-65s beat the Celtic Nations and Switzerland, with Jim Gorman and Noel Agnew finding the net, but a series of drawn matches left them short of the final.

Team manager Gary Barclay said the over-70s showed skill, determination, teamwork and camaraderie. He noted that while there are over 200,000 people playing walking football in Great Britain, Northern Ireland has around 300 players, making the achievement significant.

Walking football is a modified version of the game designed for older adults, people returning from injury, or those wanting lower-impact activity. Running or jogging is not allowed; a free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player runs.

Barclay encouraged more people to try walking football, saying it improves physical fitness, supports mental wellbeing, and offers a chance to make friends in a growing community. Contact details for local clubs are available from David Lemon by email.
