The Foyle Cup youth football tournament opened on Monday with a record 1,013 teams, delivering a multi-million pound boost to the north west economy. Organisers estimate over 200,000 attendees during the week-long event, which runs until Saturday 25 July.

A parade from Ulster University's Magee campus to Guildhall Square marked the start. Thousands of players from Ireland, the UK, Europe and North America marched through the city, cheered by crowds along Northland Road, Great James Street, Strand Road and Waterloo Place.

Almost 4,000 matches will be played across more than 60 venues, covering boys, girls and disability football from under-8 to under-19. Dick Tucker, an Employer Liaison Officer at North West Regional College who has been a referee since the tournament began in 1992, said referees travel from across the world and hundreds of volunteers ensure the event runs smoothly.

International participation has grown sharply. Good Lad Soccer, a Florida-based programme, returned with a group of over 200 people, including 70 players, after bringing 25 last year. Coach Gavin Carlin, originally from Donegal, said the tournament exposes young players to different cultures and playing styles, and families enjoy the local hospitality.

Tournament Secretary Diolain Ward highlighted the event's expanding global reputation, with teams from the United States, Europe and Norway. Bed occupancy exceeded 90 per cent in 2025 and is expected to be higher this year.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Grace Uí Niallais described a family-friendly atmosphere and praised the friendships on display. Former player Ben Doherty, now with Coleraine FC, recalled the tournament as a highlight of his development and urged current participants to enjoy the experience.

The Foyle Cup started with eight teams in 1992. It has grown into one of the world's largest youth tournaments, with past participants including Paddy McCourt, James McClean and Darron Gibson.
