Police in Derry have issued a warning about hidden dangers in local rivers and waterways as warmer weather increases water activities.

The PSNI said strong currents, deep water and underwater obstructions can create sudden risks even for strong swimmers.

Parents are advised to speak to children about water safety and to monitor their location during the summer months.

Missing or damaged life-saving equipment such as buoys, ropes and rings should be reported to police or relevant authorities.

The warning comes ahead of the summer period when more people are expected to enter the water.
