Groomsport has been named Ireland's Best Kept Small Town for 2026. The County Down village came out ahead of Donaghadee, Adare in County Limerick and Rosslare Strand in County Wexford.

The winner was announced at a ceremony in Riddel Hall, Belfast. Dara Calleary TD, Ireland's Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, and James Cochrane, deputy mayor of Ards and North Down, were present.

Mr Calleary congratulated Groomsport and all communities that took part. He highlighted the town's appearance, community pride, environmental stewardship and welcoming character for residents and visitors. He described the competition as a celebration of community spirit and pride found across towns and villages throughout Ireland.

Mr Cochrane said the award recognised the volunteers who work throughout the year to maintain and improve Groomsport. He also noted Donaghadee's place among the finalists in the same category.

The Ireland's Best Kept Town Competition is an all-island initiative. It brings together leading communities from the SuperValu TidyTowns competition and Northern Ireland's Best Kept Awards. Towns are judged on cleanliness, public spaces, buildings, roads, facilities and the quality of the local environment.

The competition is in its 31st year and promotes community-led environmental improvement and enhancement projects.

Volunteers said the win provides a major accolade for the community and everyone who contributed to Groomsport's success.
