A man in his 60s has died following a fire at a flat in the Galliagh area of Derry.

The blaze, in Bloomfield Park, was reported to police at 3:42pm on Wednesday. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service sent five fire appliances to the scene. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service dispatched a rapid response paramedic and an ambulance officer, but no one was taken from the scene by ambulance.

Police officers remain at the scene and a cordon is in place. A post-mortem examination will be held to establish the cause of death, and enquiries are ongoing.

SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said there was shock and sadness in Galliagh and across the city after the man's death. He offered condolences to the family and friends of the man, and said the community would support them in the days and weeks ahead. He also paid tribute to emergency services, saying they do a difficult job in challenging circumstances and the community relies on them.

Sinn Féin councillor Sandra Duffy described the death as heartbreaking. She said she had been in contact with the family, who were devastated. She said the local community was shocked but would rally around the grieving family. Duffy thanked the emergency services for their efforts.
