A man in his 30s died after a fire broke out in a bathroom of the emergency department at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service received reports of the blaze at 6.43pm or 6.45pm on Wednesday, 22 April. Four fire appliances attended from Springfield, Central, Cadogan and Whitla stations, along with around 20 personnel.

Firefighters found the fire already extinguished on arrival. They ventilated the premises using breathing apparatus and checked gas levels with monitors.

The man suffered burns in the incident and later died in hospital. Police are treating the death as sudden and not suspicious.

Crews left the scene at 9.02pm or 9.10pm. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service diverted patients to other emergency departments during the incident.

West Belfast MP Paul Maskey offered condolences to the man's family and thanked emergency services for their response.
