A man in his sixties has died following a fire at a flat in the Galliagh area of Londonderry.

The blaze in Bloomfield Park was reported to emergency services at 3.39pm on Wednesday 19 August 2026. Police confirmed the death and said a post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of death.

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service said firefighters from Northland, Crescent Link and Strabane stations attended, using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to put out the fire. The incident was brought under control by 6.16pm.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said the death has brought a deep sense of shock and sadness to Galliagh and the wider city. He offered sympathy to the man's family and friends and acknowledged the work of the emergency services who responded.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the fire.
