The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency has released provisional data showing 319 deaths were registered in the week ending 18 September 2026.

This is 36 fewer than the 355 deaths registered in the previous week.

The agency estimated 337 deaths were expected for that week, using a methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths was -18, meaning there were 18 fewer deaths than expected.

Of the 319 deaths, 167 were male and 152 were female. Expected deaths were 172 for males and 165 for females, giving excess deaths of -5 for males and -13 for females.

For 2026 so far, up to 18 September, 12,794 deaths have been registered. Of these, 5,805 took place in hospital, 2,266 in care homes, and 4,723 at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

In the same period, 50.6% of deaths were male and 49.4% female. Over two-thirds (67.3%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.

The number of deaths mentioning flu and/or pneumonia on the death certificate registered in that week totalled 47, bringing the total for 2026 so far to 2,193.

The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 18 September, including those registered up to 23 September, was 241.
