Agriculture Minister Andrew Muir has confirmed that his department is conducting a lessons learned review after the court-ordered destruction of cattle on private land near Fivemiletown in June. The operation has drawn criticism from the Ulster Farmers' Union (UFU), which has requested an urgent meeting with the Minister.

On June 6, a court issued a deprivation order requiring the immediate disposal of cattle at a Shantonnagh Road location due to serious animal welfare concerns. DAERA officials carried out the operation on June 29, shooting 50 cows in a field near residential properties and a public road.

The remote location necessitated detailed planning, and police support was initially arranged. However, the Minister noted that a small number of members of the public attempted to disrupt the operation, causing delays. Police were unable to respond to requests for assistance during the operation because of operational difficulties, he said. The work was completed after 10pm, with carcass removal beginning the next morning.

In correspondence with Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Deborah Erskine, Minister Muir explained that the field location was chosen due to unique operational and health and safety considerations, though he was not at liberty to discuss details. He added that no injuries or health and safety incidents were reported. The Minister praised staff for enduring considerable physical and mental demands during what he called an unusual operation.

The Minister confirmed that a thorough lessons learned exercise is under way. As part of the review, DAERA officials have contacted the PSNI and arranged a meeting to discuss the issues encountered and to agree on future procedures and assurances for police support in similar situations.

UFU President John McLenaghan said the level of concern among members could not be ignored. He stated that regardless of the circumstances, the destruction of livestock must be humane, proportionate, and maintain public confidence. The union has requested an immediate meeting with Minister Muir and expects the review to deliver clear answers and full transparency.
