Thieves stole plant equipment and damaged machinery worth several thousand pounds from a construction site on Carnagat Road in Newry. The incident occurred recently. Earlier in the week, machinery was stolen from another nearby site on the same road.

Sinn Féin councillor Mathers condemned the thefts and acts of vandalism. He stated that local tradespeople and workers face risks to their livelihoods from these crimes. Residents worry about effects on the wider area.

One affected site involves social housing construction by Kelly Brothers. The project provides employment and homes for local families. Vandalism targeted machinery there during the week.

Mathers called the vandalism unacceptable. He noted that the development supports local jobs and housing needs. Workers on site endure criminal and reckless behaviour.

The councillor urged the public to report suspicious activity around the sites. He appealed to parents to monitor their children's whereabouts and actions. He said those responsible disregard impacts on workers, businesses and the community.
