Plans for long-awaited link roads to ease traffic congestion in Armagh have been pushed further into the future, with a draft of the new Regional Strategic Transport Plan not expected until late 2026.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins stated that the Department for Infrastructure is aware of congestion in Armagh, especially during peak times, but that opportunities to enhance traffic flow at major junctions are currently limited. Officials will continue to monitor and address safety concerns.

The Department is developing the Regional Strategic Transport Plan to 2035, which will set investment priorities across the strategic road network. Proposals such as the Armagh East Link and Armagh North and West Link will be considered as part of that process. A draft plan is scheduled for public consultation in late 2026.

Newry and Armagh DUP MLA Gareth Wilson expressed frustration at what he described as a lack of progress. He said traffic congestion in the city is not a new issue and that residents, businesses and commuters have been dealing with it for years. The confirmation that a draft plan will not be published until later this year means more waiting and more assessment for communities that have already been waiting far too long.

Mr Wilson urged the Department to take a more proactive approach, saying there needs to be a clear commitment to advancing solutions, keeping to timelines, and ensuring that important infrastructure projects do not slip any further.
