Omagh High School teacher Tom Cushnie remembered for devotion to education and craftsmanship
The funeral of Thomas Meryn Cushnie, a long-serving teacher at Omagh High School, took place on Tuesday at St Columba’s Church in Omagh. Mr Cushnie was 85.
A Service of Thanksgiving was led by Reverend Alexander Chisnall, who reflected on Mr Cushnie’s career and personal qualities.
Reverend Chisnall said Mr Cushnie was a devoted educator who inspired many pupils. He had a natural gift for communication and a deep commitment to helping others.
The minister noted Mr Cushnie’s inquisitive nature and his passion for travel. He journeyed through South America and Japan, and spent holidays in France with his family. He would share his experiences with others upon returning home.
Mr Cushnie also enjoyed working with his hands. He took satisfaction in crafting items and often made things for the benefit of others.
Following the service, burial took place at Old Drumragh Cemetery. Mr Cushnie is survived by his children Tim, Catherine and Sarah, their spouses, and five grandchildren. His wife Catherine predeceased him, as did his brother John.
