Priest Who Installed Northern Ireland's First Digester Passes Away
Rev. Father Jim Conlon, a priest with a background in farm management, died on Wednesday, March 4, at Greenpark Nursing Home. He passed away peacefully in the care of the staff there.
Father Conlon originally came from Portglenone in Co. Antrim. He served as farm manager at Our Lady of Bethlehem Abbey in Portglenone. In the 1980s, he installed one of Northern Ireland's first digesters at the monastery farmyard.
People visited the digester from various locations in its early years. Father Conlon welcomed them. Later, he moved to Lisadian in Co. Armagh. He made friends there and kept residents at Greenpark Nursing Home in conversation.
A funeral service takes place on Friday at 11am at The Church of The Immaculate Conception in Tullysaran. Burial follows in Old Tullysaran Cemetery.
