The Northern Ireland Housing Executive has launched a public consultation on its draft Irish Traveller Accommodation Strategy. The strategy, which will run until 2031, sets out the organisation’s approach to addressing the accommodation needs of Irish Travellers.

The consultation is open for 12 weeks and will close on 28 September 2026. It focuses on four main areas: understanding accommodation needs, providing appropriate accommodation sites, embedding effective communication and supporting good relations, and strengthening the evidence base through collaboration and research.

The Housing Executive assumed strategic responsibility for Irish Traveller accommodation from district councils in 2003. David Glasgow, Irish Traveller Policy and Delivery Manager, stated that the consultation offers an important chance for Irish Travellers, stakeholders and the wider public to help shape the strategy.

He said the draft strategy recognises the complexity of Irish Traveller accommodation and the need for partnership working, sustained engagement and a focus on delivery. He added that responses will inform the final strategy and future actions.
