A 61-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug offences after police in Castlewellan seized suspected class A and B drugs and a substantial amount of cash during an early-morning vehicle stop and subsequent house search.

The PSNI stopped the car on Bann Road at about 12:30am on Sunday, 5th July, after it was seen acting suspiciously. Officers detected a strong smell of cannabis and, upon searching the vehicle, found suspected drugs and cash.

The driver, the sole occupant, was arrested and a search of his home uncovered additional suspected drugs, drug paraphernalia, a significant sum of cash in sterling and euro, and several mobile phones which were seized for forensic examination.

He remains in custody on suspicion of possession of a class A drug with intent to supply, possession of criminal property, and possession of a class B controlled drug.

Chief Inspector Caldwell of the Newry, Mourne and Down district said the patrol officers' work was excellent and that tackling illegal drug supply is a priority. He urged anyone with information about drug activity to contact police or Crimestoppers anonymously.
