FactCheckNI Reaffirms Independence After Immigration Work Criticised
FactCheckNI has stated that its work is driven entirely by evidence and not influenced by funders, following criticism of its recent analysis on immigration.
The organisation was established over a decade ago to help people navigate an increasingly complex information environment. It is independent, non-partisan, and internationally accredited. Alongside published fact checks, it works directly with schools, community groups and professionals to build critical thinking and media literacy skills.
Its latest funding information is publicly available on its website, and the organisation says funders have no influence over the conclusions it reaches. FactCheckNI rejects any suggestion that its work is disinformation, noting that its sources, evidence and methodology are published for scrutiny.
Recently it published an analysis based on official figures relating to the refugee population in Northern Ireland, and how this compares with other parts of the UK. The organisation encourages anyone interested in the issue to read the article.
Managing director Dr Orna Young said people may disagree about policy, but they should be able to start from the same set of facts. The organisation engages with individuals and representatives from all political backgrounds across Northern Ireland, checking claims made by members of the public, broadcasters, newspaper columnists and elected representatives.
