The Met Office has issued a weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain expected across parts of Northern Ireland. The warning highlights the possibility of difficult driving conditions, localised flooding, lightning strikes and power outages.

Members of the public are urged to avoid travel during heavy downpours unless absolutely necessary. Those who must drive are advised to plan their journey carefully, allow extra time and be aware of hidden hazards such as submerged manholes or fast-flowing water. Never attempt to walk through flood water.

To report flooding on roads, burst water mains or blocked drains, the Flooding Incident Line is available 24 hours a day on 0300 2000 100. This is a non-emergency number. In any situation where life is at risk, the public should call 999.

Power cuts can be reported directly to NIE Networks. Fallen trees or blocked roads should be brought to the attention of the relevant authorities. Residents whose homes are flooded due to heavy rainfall are advised to contact their local council to enquire about emergency payment schemes.

After flooding, property owners should keep a record of all damage and any correspondence with their insurance provider. If separate insurers cover the building and contents, both must be informed. Renters should contact their landlord regarding structural issues and their own insurer for contents. Flood water should be treated as potentially contaminated. Anyone developing a stomach upset following exposure is advised to contact their GP.

Travel updates are available on the TrafficwatchNI website for road conditions and on the Translink website for bus and rail services. Local council websites may also provide information on any disruption to services.
