Pipe bomb explodes on family car in Londonderry
A pipe bomb left on the windscreen of a family car exploded in the Nelson Drive area of Londonderry, causing extensive damage.
Police were called to the Waterside location at about 12:30 BST on Tuesday after reports of a loud bang. Officers found a car window smashed and remnants of an explosive device on the vehicle.
Army bomb disposal experts attended the scene and the occupants of the house were required to leave their home for a time while the device was made safe.
Detectives are investigating the motive for the attack. No arrests have been reported.
DUP MP for East Londonderry Gregory Campbell described the incident as a worrying development and said it had unnerved the local community, which includes many elderly residents and young families.
Campbell noted that two schools are in the immediate vicinity and said it was crucial for police to keep the public informed about lines of inquiry.
He appealed for anyone with information to assist the police investigation.
