Sinn Fein candidates received 17.5% of first preference votes in the Dublin Central by-election and 6.7% in Galway West. Neither result placed the party close to victory.

The Dublin seat went to a candidate from Independent Ireland who received 16,519 votes after transfers. Fine Gael won Galway West with 19,218 votes after transfers.

Sinn Fein support in the Republic has varied in general elections. The party recorded 6.9% in 2007, 9.9% in 2011, 13.8% in 2016, 24.5% in 2020 and just under 20% in 2024.

Voters in the Republic rejected Sinn Fein candidates by wide margins before the 1998 Belfast Agreement. The party received around 3% of the vote in southern polls from the early 1980s to 1998.

In the 1997 general election Sinn Fein obtained 2.5% of first preference votes and won one seat out of 166.

Support remains higher in constituencies near the border with Northern Ireland than in other areas of the Republic.

Sinn Fein lost votes in Dublin Central to candidate Gerry Hutch, who had previously served prison terms.
