Connswater Shopping Centre Remains Derelict Amid Anti-Social Behaviour Concerns
The Connswater Shopping Centre in east Belfast has remained vacant since its closure in March 2023.
The centre operated for 40 years before entering receivership with two weeks' notice due to falling footfall and high vacancy rates.
Since closure, the 162,000 square foot site with 52 units has attracted urban explorers and been targeted for anti-social behaviour.
Four young people were detained by police in April following incidents of criminal damage at the premises.
PSNI Neighbourhood Inspector Dawson stated that officers are working with residents and community representatives to address safety concerns at the derelict building.
Councillor Ruth Brooks said fencing around the site is not a sustainable long-term solution and expressed concern about ongoing dereliction on the Newtownards Road.
No decisions have been made on the site's future, though proposals include housing and mixed-use retail development.
