Police detained four young people after they entered the derelict Connswater Shopping Centre in East Belfast. The shopping centre closed to the public on March 21, 2025.

On April 15 at around 7.25pm, officers responded to reports of young people inside the premises. A 14-year-old girl was detained and referred to a Youth Diversion Officer. Details of other young people present were recorded, with letters planned for their parents or guardians.

The next day, April 16 at around 5.30pm, police returned after reports of youths re-entering the site. Three young people were detained and referred to the Youth Diversion Officer.

Neighbourhood Inspector Dawson stated police are addressing ongoing anti-social behaviour and criminal damage at the derelict site. Officers are engaging with residents, community representatives, partner agencies, and local representatives to find solutions.

Inspector Dawson noted derelict buildings are unsafe and urged young people to stop the behaviour. He emphasised residents' rights to live in peace and feel safe. Parents and guardians should monitor their young people's whereabouts and warn them of risks including injury or criminal records.
