Public Warned Over Giant Hogweed Sightings
Northern Ireland residents have been advised to avoid contact with giant hogweed after warnings about its harmful effects on skin.
The plant grows between three and five metres tall and is typically found in damp soils. It resembles hogweed and cow parsley.
Contact with the plant's sap can cause blistering and swelling, with symptoms appearing within 24 hours and worsening after sun exposure.
Anyone who encounters giant hogweed should wash the affected area and seek medical advice if blistering occurs or if contact involves the eyes.
The public has been asked to report any sightings of the plant to the relevant authorities.
