A 16-year-old boy from the Dungannon area is in critical condition after getting into difficulty in the water at Emy Lough, Emyvale, Co Monaghan.

The incident occurred on Monday, May 25, shortly before 5pm. The teenager was at the lake with friends on the Northern Ireland Bank Holiday.

Members of the public, including local swimmers Dzintra McConnon and Johnny McConnell, pulled the boy from the water after he had been submerged for around five minutes.

They administered CPR at the scene until emergency services arrived. Gardaí and other emergency services responded to reports of a youth in distress.

The boy was airlifted by air ambulance to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed medical assistance was provided at the scene and that the teenager's condition remains critical.

Local councillor Pauric Clerkin said the incident has affected the community and expressed thoughts and prayers for the boy and his family.
