A retired woman from Parkgate in County Antrim has begun fostering dogs for a local charity after watching a television programme about canine rescue.

Janet Millar started providing temporary homes for dogs in January last year and now cares for animals awaiting permanent adoption.

She said fostering fits her lifestyle, provides company, improves her sleep and gives her a daily routine that keeps her active.

Dogs Trust Ballymena currently looks after 52 dogs, with seven already placed in foster homes.

Foster co-ordinator Carrie McErlean said volunteer carers help the charity free up kennel space and offer dogs a home environment.

McErlean said the charity is seeking more people willing to foster dogs of any breed, age or temperament.

Millar said she would advise others considering the role to try it, noting that she has no regrets.
