Omagh identified as Northern Ireland’s worst area for tree cover
Omagh has been ranked as the worst-performing area in Northern Ireland for tree cover according to a new study by the Woodland Trust.
The study found that both Omagh and Coalisland are among the UK’s most exposed urban areas due to critically low levels of tree cover.
The Woodland Trust noted that trees can reduce air pollution and noise, keep areas cooler, improve biodiversity, and enhance the appearance of towns.
Studies cited by the trust also show that trees can help reduce stress, ease anxiety and depression, stabilise blood pressure, and encourage healthier lifestyles.
A 2025 survey by the Woodland Trust of more than 2,000 urban residents found that 88 per cent believe everyone should have fair access to trees regardless of location.
Sir Bob Salisbury, Conservation Corner columnist with the Ulster Herald, said trees offer cleaner air and lift the spirit in urban areas.
Salisbury suggested that residents could take responsibility for maintaining newly-planted trees, citing a London scheme as an example.
