The Education Authority in Northern Ireland has started a peer-to-peer leadership support programme for schools developing specialist provision for children with special educational needs. Five principals with experience in such classes will serve part-time as Principal Advisors to designated schools.

The advisors will give guidance on planning, governance, staffing, curriculum and operational systems. This programme runs from May 2026 to November 2026. Schools will get regular visits, online meetings and collaboration with SEN staff and education officers.

Since 2020, the Education Authority has created over 6,000 additional SEN places across Northern Ireland schools. Specialist provision means dedicated classes within mainstream schools for pupils with special educational needs.

Dale Hanna, EA Chief Operations Officer, stated the authority's commitment to supporting schools in establishing sustainable SEN provision through experienced peers. The aim is to build confident leadership teams that meet pupils' changing needs.

The Principal Advisors Programme is part of an Enhanced Support Package. This includes SENCO release support, funding for teaching and classroom staff, staff training, school premises enhancements, and annual payments for pupils and administration.

A key result will be a Specialist Provision Blueprint. This document will offer evidence-based guidance for schools and the Education Authority to ensure consistent decision-making.
