Northern Ireland Assembly Passes Bill to End RHI Scheme
The Northern Ireland Assembly supported the RHI (Closure of Non-Domestic Scheme) Bill at its Final Stage. The bill provides the legal framework to end the scheme.
Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald welcomed the decision. She stated that closing the scheme in an orderly way ensures a fair outcome for participants and taxpayers. Archibald noted that her department will outline operational details in forthcoming regulations, which require Assembly approval.
The minister plans to share next steps with the relevant Committee soon for further scrutiny. She thanked those who prepared and examined the bill.
Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney welcomed the scheme's closure. The scheme began under DUP member Arlene Foster.
Kearney said the closure ends a period that affected public trust, households, and businesses. He noted the initiative aimed to tackle climate change but led to costs of about £500 million for public funds.
Kearney called the scheme a result of government shortcomings. He stated the DUP now disrupts the Assembly and Executive to address internal unionist issues. He pointed out Paul Givan's recent Assembly comments on fiscal responsibility during a child support debate.
