A cat named Derek, known for residing in a car park on Broughshane Street in Ballymena, has died from end-stage heart failure. Locals built a white kennel for him there and fed him regularly.

His owner, Helen Gibson, set up a fundraising page for his veterinary treatment when he struggled to breathe. The page has raised almost £2,800. Gibson stated that staff at Clare Veterinary Practice cared for him until he passed peacefully.

Floral tributes now cover his kennel. Local newsagent Eugene Diamond noted that customers have shared their sadness about Derek's death. He photographed the flowers, and the images received around 300 comments on social media.

Diamond said people took Derek to heart and expressed devastation. Feedback came from as far as New Zealand via local family connections.

Gibson plans a memorial service for Derek and a permanent memorial in the car park, pending council permission. An inspection occurs on Friday to select the site, followed by an application process.
