Ballymena Mourns Local Cat with Tributes and Memorial Plans
A cat named Derek, familiar to people in Ballymena, Co Antrim, died on May 5 after collapsing from heart problems near Cameron’s carpark by Broughshane Street.
Owner Helen Gibson reported the news on a GoFundMe page. The page had raised more than £2,000 for his care at Clare Veterinary Practice.
Staff there stabilised Derek before his passing. Gibson noted their affection for the cat.
Flowers and letters appeared this week at his usual spot close to the department store.
Gibson plans a memorial service with details to follow. She also intends a permanent marker in the carpark if council approval comes, plus a fund for other cats using surplus money after vet bills.
