Man Charged with Threatening Calls to Newry Councillors
Detectives from Newry, Mourne and Down CID have charged a 36-year-old man with three counts of threatening communications under the Online Safety Act 2023. The charges relate to telephone calls made to two local councillors in Newry in December 2025 and February this year.
The man was arrested in the Kilkeel area of Co Down. He remains in custody following the arrest.
He is scheduled to appear at Newry Magistrates' Court on 3 June. Charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service as standard procedure.
Chief Inspector Adam Ruston stated that elected representatives face routine abuse and threats, which police view as unacceptable. He added that detectives will investigate reported offences thoroughly and support politicians to work without fear.
