Presbyterian Church in Ireland Welcomes End of Assisted Suicide Bill
The Presbyterian Church in Ireland has stated relief at the end of the UK 2024-2026 Parliamentary Session, which led to the demise of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. The bill will not become law in England and Wales.
Rt Rev Dr Richard Murray, PCI moderator, and Rev Daniel Kane, convener of PCI council for public affairs, affirmed the church's position on the dignity of human life from conception to death.
The church leaders noted that initial stages of the bill passed in the House of Commons last June. They expressed thanks that further progress did not occur.
The church indicated that the bill's passage would have pressured the NHS, which focuses on healing and preserving life.
PCI leaders called for investment in palliative care services across the islands to support people nearing the end of life.
They stated that well-resourced palliative care offers the safest and most compassionate approach physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
