Fermanagh Mother Details Years of Psychological Abuse and Post-Separation Harassment
A mother from County Fermanagh experienced sustained psychological abuse from her partner that escalated during her pregnancy and continued after their separation.
The abuse began with isolated degrading remarks but grew into frequent humiliation delivered privately while her partner acted normally in public. She altered her behavior to avoid conflict and felt increasingly isolated as he claimed others disliked her.
Intimidation included punching walls, damaging home property, and erratic driving, creating fear of escalation without sustained physical violence. During pregnancy, control intensified, including financial restrictions and false accusations.
She attempted to leave during pregnancy and after her child's birth but returned each time. The relationship ended, yet her former partner arrived unannounced at her home, let himself in, drove around her area, and made repeated calls, such as 17 in 20 minutes.
Police responses were inconsistent over five negative encounters until an officer recognized the abuse. She views incidents as a pattern requiring collective assessment.
Long-term effects include anxiety, sleep issues, rumination, and flashbacks during routine tasks. She once fled her home overnight with few belongings and notes leaving often requires multiple attempts.
She now urges victims to seek trusted support, stressing available help despite challenges.
