Teen Volunteers Support Patients at Lisburn Brain Injury Hospital
Two teenagers volunteer at Thompson House Hospital in Lisburn. The facility provides post-acute assessment and rehabilitation for adults with acquired brain injuries or complex neuro disabilities.
Katie Mulholland, 18, and Harry Johnston, 17, joined the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust site in January. Katie attends Friends’ School and volunteers to gain experience toward a medical career. She plans to study medicine at university.
Katie spends time with patients and finds the role rewarding. She notes that patients benefit from the interactions. She aims to continue volunteering after completing her A-levels and encourages others to join.
Harry volunteers twice a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. He chats with patients, plays games, and walks in the grounds. He enjoys the hospital environment and values the experience.
Victoria Quinn, interim manager at Thompson House Hospital, welcomes the young volunteers. She states that their enthusiasm and kindness benefit patients. Patients anticipate their visits, which aid rehabilitation.
