Mid Ulster Council Advances Ulster-Scots Street Signs in Dungannon Amid Mixed Bilingual Survey Results
Residents in Northland Village, Dungannon, have submitted a request to Mid Ulster District Council for street signs in Ulster-Scots and English. This marks the first such request in the council area, differing from the usual Irish and English signs. A survey of residents will follow, needing 51 per cent approval per council policy.
Surveys on English-Irish bilingual signs produced varied outcomes in other locations. In Knocknagin Road, Desertmartin, 46 letters went out last February. Eight residents supported the signs and 18 opposed them, yielding 31 per cent in favour among respondents.
On Kingarve Road, Dungannon, 66 letters were issued and 47 returned. Twenty supported bilingual signs and 27 opposed them, resulting in 43 per cent approval.
Chestnut Grove in Aughnacloy saw full participation from 10 householders. Eight favoured English-Irish signs and two opposed, achieving 80 per cent support. Bilingual signage will be installed there.
A survey for English-Irish signs is planned at Lurgyroe Drive, Ardboe. Ongoing surveys cover Ballymaguire Road in Stewartstown, Ballyvaddy Road in Dungannon, and The Oaks in Ballinderry. Results will go to the Environment Committee meeting on May 12.
