Coastguard Helicopter Rescues Person from Giant's Causeway Cliff
Coastguard teams rescued a person from the base of a 100-metre cliff near Hamilton’s Seat at the Giant’s Causeway. The incident occurred on Friday night, April 17, starting around 10.30pm.
The person had become lost and disorientated in darkness on difficult terrain. They contacted friends by phone, who alerted the Coastguard.
Ballycastle Coastguard Rescue Team, Coleraine Coastguard team and a Senior Coastal Operations Officer responded. A rope rescue technician was lowered over the cliff edge to locate the person.
Teams decided against ground recovery due to the unstable cliff face with loose rock and night-time risks. An Irish Coastguard helicopter from Sligo performed a winch rescue in challenging conditions.
The person reached the top of the cliff and was handed to Coastguard rescue officers around 2.30am. The casualty was very cold but sustained no further injuries and was reunited with friends.
