Antrim GAA Team's 1946 All-Ireland Campaign Recalled Through Family Photo
A photograph from 1946 captures Antrim Gaelic football players facing Dublin in the O’Donovan Rossa Challenge match at Croke Park. The image shows three Antrim players and three Dublin players. One Antrim player pictured is George Watterson, positioned in the left foreground.
Antrim defeated Cavan in the Ulster Senior Football Championship final that year. This marked Antrim's first Ulster title since 1913 after Cavan had won 14 of the previous 15. Antrim then lost to Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final on August 18, 1946, with a score of Kerry 2-7 to Antrim 0-10.
George Watterson captained the Antrim team. He operated a shop on the Falls Road in west Belfast. Players including Kevin Armstrong, Harry O’Neill, and Sean Gibson visited the shop.
Weeshie Fogarty, a Kerry footballer, described the semi-final conditions as heavy rain. He noted Antrim equalized by half-time after an early Kerry goal by Bill O’Donnell. Both teams had a player sent off during rugged play. A bottle was thrown from the Cusack Stand at a Kerry player.
Sean O’Neill frequented Watterson's shop. The last surviving member of the 1946 Antrim squad, Eddie Spence, died in 2023 at age 97.
