Cookstown Teen Completes 12-Hour Bike Challenge for Dementia UK
A 15-year-old from Cookstown completed a 12-hour cycling challenge in Davagh Forest to support Dementia UK. Dylan Hughes undertook the effort in memory of his great-grandmother Eileen Henry, who died in January 2023.
Hughes started cycling at 7am on Tuesday and finished at 7pm. He covered the distance despite fallen trees on the trail from recent storm damage. Friends joined him for parts of the ride.
He took short breaks hourly to eat items like waffles and chicken with rice. The first three hours passed quickly, and company from friends helped the day continue.
Hughes set up a JustGiving page in November to collect funds. Donations have exceeded £5,000, aimed at care, research, and family support for those affected by dementia.
His mother Karen provided food and drinks during the challenge. She noted his independent effort from planning to completion. The fundraising page remains open for contributions.
